Ecovillages are intended to be socially, economically and ecologically sustainable intentional communities. The Lokelani 'Ohana Ecovillage master plan, will be the first full featured Maui county settlement in which human activities are harmlessly integrated into the natural world in a way that is supportive of healthy human development, and can be successfully continued into the indefinite future.
Lokelani ‘Ohana, a non-profit creating sustainable community with people of special needs, is seeking 10-20 acres to implement their master plan for the first Ecovillage on Maui. The master plan was on display at the recent event in Makawao (See current events link on left). The master plan was met with great enthusiasm by the "Green Energy" community in attendance at the event on August 20, 2009. The plan outline details a completely off the grid community which produces more energy than it consumes to be phase constructed once suitable land can be found to accommodate the project. If you would like to find out how you can discuss land donation or to volunteer to be a part of this phase of our community growth and development, Please contact: Tony Leone, Chair of Land Development: tony@lokelaniohana.org
Chris & Tony having a good time at the exposition with 29 school children from the Carden Academy. The Lokelani informational table was set up to display the new master plan outline for a sustainable community. The class and their teacher have stated they wish to plan a field trip to the Lokelani Waihee Farm to volunteer for a day in the garden. We welcome this wonderful group of energetic students. Tony is about to demonstrate the HHO gas electrolyzer to show the school children the power of Hydrogen gas produced and packaged in soap bubbles, that he will ignight in a willing student's hand. You can scroll down to see the result in the expressions on the faces of the students. The expression on Chris' face shows that he knows what is about to happen! ........ POW !
The table at the event was visited by many people who were interested in sustainable community and many who asked the same question "What is Vermiculture anyhow?" That would be the critters that work for us on the farm to make our mulch, our wonderful worms!
